Skyrim in Virtual Reality using HMZ-T1, TrackIR & Kinect

March 19th, 2012

Skyrim played through a simulated Virtual Reality environment using a head mounted display, head tracking, motion sensing and speech recognition. I’ve also written up a walkthrough on how you can do it yourself too: zookal.com This is what was used for the demo: – Skyrim – A first person action role-playing game for the PC. – Sony HMZ-T1 – High definition head mounted display with Stereoscopic 3D. – Microsoft Kinect – Track movement and gestures. – TrackIR 5 – Head tracking. – TrackClip Pro – Used with the TrackIR 5 for more accurate head tracking. – Shoot – Speech recognition software. – FAAST 0.9 – Software used to map Kinect gestures to the keyboard I’ve setup the Sony HMZ-T1 head mounted display to use Stereoscopic 3D as well as attached the TrackClip Pro on it for head tracking. I had to place the TrackIR 5 on a wire hanging from the ceiling as it needed to be around head level to track my head movements properly. The Kinect was setup on the PC using PrimeSense’s OpenNI drivers. I used FAAST 0.9 with a custom script to map certain gestures with the keyboard, such as walking on the spot to move in the game, leaning left, leaning right, jumping and moving my right arm forward to use the sword. Shoot was used to map several speech commands with actions in the game as well, such as saying ‘Open Menu’ and ‘Close Menu’ to trigger the in-game menu, as well as using commands to navigate through the menu. All the devices to do this cost less than $1500, although it is still …

USC Researchers Debut Smartphone 3-D Virtual Reality Viewer Made Out of Cardboard

March 13th, 2012

Smart phones have endless applications that keep users connected to the real world. But researchers from the Mixed Reality (MxR) Lab at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies are developing ways to use these ubiquitous devices to transport people to virtual worlds as well. Beginning Sunday, March 4, at the Workshop on Off-The-Shelf Virtual Reality, they began handing hundreds of manila envelopes, each containing a FOV2GO, a portable fold-out iPhone and Android viewer that turns the smartphone screen into a 3-D virtual reality system. Downloadable software allows users to create their own virtual worlds or environments to display. Developed with researchers from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the folded paper device, constructed for under five dollars, is one of a growing number of do-it-yourself projects that are decreasing the overhead and hardware required for fully immersive virtual reality experiences. These low-cost, lightweight systems can be used to create portable virtual reality applications for training, education, health and fitness, entertainment and more. "I am happy to be able to introduce the FOV2GO at the IEEE VR Conference," said Mark Bolas who heads up the MxR Lab at ICT and is also an associate professor in the interactive media division of the USC School of Cinematic Arts. "This conference has been the premiere venue in the field of VR since its inception in 1999 and now more than a decade later we can put …

Virtual Reality Goggles

March 4th, 2012

PD&D TV Host Louise Rainone talks to Jason Kaplan of Sensics at CES 2012 about head-tracking 3D Smart Goggles, a new spin on virtual reality goggles. With an embedded android processor, the headset is essentially a computer that you mount to your head. The goggles have cameras designed into the front of the mask, which sense the movement of peripherals (arms, steering wheel, etc) and integrate it into the game. The platform is also built to incorporate augmented reality. Louise takes the Smart Goggles for a test spin and destroys a few virtual buildings in the process. Check out more CES 2012 coverage on www.pddnet.com.
